Kitchen Queen

She is a registered dietitian with a sweet tooth and a passion for eating healthy (quite a combo), currently working as a Community Nutritionist in Washington DC. She is also a blogger, health nut, digital scrap-booker, nutrition geek and food connoisseur. “I love to revamp recipes and add some ‘nutrition bytes’ to them, and my poor family are the guinea pigs for all my ‘nutri-inventions’ and crazy concoctions. I also love listening to music and can get very crabby when my iPod is out of charge,” proclaims Sunithi Selvaraj, the author of “Sue’s Nutrition Buzz”, a hugely popular blog that advocates healthy eating and a healthy way of life.

Sunithi grew up in Bangalore and studied nutrition at CMC Vellore, after which she worked as a dietitian in India and Middle East for four years before getting married and moving to the United States. “I also completed the coordinated dietetic internship at Harvard University, USA where I got awarded the best dietitian honor,” she tells.

Speaking about her blog that has captured the attention of many health conscious people she says that she started this blog two years ago in an attempt to nurture the inner ‘geek’ in her. “I wanted to do something different for myself apart from just being a working mom and wife. As we get older, keeping healthy, staying fit and having oodles of energy to keep up with life is not easy. I am still learning from others and my own life experiences, and wanted to share my thoughts and some nutrition bytes that I have picked up along the way,” explains the enthusiastic blogger.

Her love for cooking has always had her mind working in overdrive, thinking of ways to make healthier versions of dishes without compromising on taste.”I believe even the most decadent foods can be created healthy. I am all about whole foods, natural flavors and healthy fats. My recipes are generally gluten free, use natural sugars and lots of coconut. I love coconuts and use the milk, cream and meat in my recipes,” she says.

Her family, whom she fondly calls her “guinea pigs”, is subjected to all of Sunithi’s experiments from the kitchen. “They grumble a bit that I am always surprising them and ask for some recipes again and I know they love those. My kids have frequently told their friends that their mom makes the best smoothies ever!” she proudly proclaims.

Despite her healthy lifestyle and her blog advocating the same, Sunithi confesses that she has a fondness for sweets and cannot resist chocolate in any form. “I believe that if a person eats healthy most of the time a little indulgence is good for the soul,” she says, adding that even she couldn’t survive with eating healthy all the time.

“You are what you eat, so treat yourself and your body well and you will reap the benefits! Relax, enjoy life and don’t stress! Be creative and enjoy your food!” is her advice to her followers.
