God is Speaking A Short Skit on Prayer

This drama requires only one person and the voice of God off stage

Girl walks into the room and prepares to go to bed.

Girl: Oh! I almost forgot to say my prayers. (She kneels and begins to pray) Our Father…

God: (Voice off stage) Yes
Girl: (She looks all around curiously and then begins her prayer again) Our Father which art in Heaven…

God: Yes

Girl: (Impatiently) Please do not interrupt me. I’m saying my prayers.

God: But you called me

Girl: I did! What did I say?

God: Our Father

Girl: Oh yes, I did. Who are you?

God: Your heavenly Father

Girl: (She looks surprised and then returns to prayer) Hallowed be thy Name…

God: What does ‘hallowed’ mean?

Girl: Hallowed? Uh…. Hallowed… I don’t know. Tell me what it means

God: It means ‘holy’ and ‘very special’. Why do you say ‘hallowed’ if you do not know what it means?

Girl: Why? Because its part of the prayer!

God: Continue

Girl: Thy kingdom come… Thy will be done…

God: If you mean that, why are you always telling me what to do and how to do it?

Girl: So I’ll get what I want?

God: My daughter, is that my will for you?

Girl: (Thoughtfully) Nooooo. It isn’t. (Bows her head and returns to prayer) Give us this day our daily bread.

God: I do provide for your needs continually

Girl: Everything?

God: Yes. Beta, with me all things are possible. But all things are not good for you.

Girl: (Long pause. She hesitates and is unsure about continuing)

God: Well beta, what are you waiting for?

Girl: I’m, afraid to continue.

God: (Lovingly) Go ahead.

Girl: (Speaks very fast and mumbles the words) Forgive us our trespasses (or sins) as we forgive those who trespass (sin) against us.

God: (Speaks loudly to stop her) Beta!

Girl: Well. I’m not going to forgive…. (insert a name). You know what she did to me! I’ll get even with her.

God: Beta, if you are not prepared to forgive ‘……’, then how can I forgive you? Whom are you really hurting?

Girl: (Pauses to reflect) Myself? I am poisoning my own mind by holding a grudge. I never thought of it in this way. (Bows head and continues)Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Girl: And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

God: I do not tempt anyone. But I do test my children. It is you who are sometimes tempted by wanting personal credit. If you will put me first and give up your pride, no evil can touch you. All my children are protected.

Girl: (Joyously) Oh, that’s good! (Beaming she bows and earnestly prays) For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory. Amen.
(Gets up from her knees and exclaims) Oh, I am so happy that I did not neglect saying prayers tonight.

Leader: How many of us pray as this girl? Without thinking about what we say or what we mean – without expecting God to hear or to answer us?
